MOZA R16 Ultra vs. R5 Pro: Which Direct-Drive Wheelbase Is Right for You?

MOZA’s R16 Ultra and R5 Pro are built for two very different users.
The R16 Ultra is a 16Nm wheelbase aimed at serious sim racers and truck-simulation enthusiasts who want more strength, detail, and headroom.
The R5 Pro produces 6Nm and is designed as a more affordable entry into direct-drive simulation.
Both wheelbases provide accurate feedback. The main difference is how much strength they have available to deliver it.
MOZA R16 Ultra
The R16 Ultra sits close to what I consider the sweet spot for a serious simulator setup.
During my rumble-strip test, it accurately reproduced each section of the curb as the tires crossed it. It also clearly communicated track texture, understeer, oversteer, changes in grip, and vehicle movement.
The advantage of a 16Nm wheelbase is not simply heavier steering. A larger motor gives you more headroom, allowing strong steering forces and smaller surface details to remain clear at the same time.
I normally run a wheelbase like this at approximately 50 percent strength. Running the R16 Ultra at 100 percent became tiring quickly and placed noticeable strain on my hands and thumbs.
You do not need to use all 16Nm to benefit from the motor.
The R16 Ultra also works extremely well for truck simulation. Trucking does not require maximum steering strength, but the larger motor provides better steering weight, engine vibration, road detail, and separation between effects.
For a serious truck-simulation setup, I generally recommend at least 9Nm.
The main design issues are the rear-mounted power button and the LED telemetry bars. The LEDs are functional, but they are difficult to see from the normal driving position.
MOZA R5 Pro
The R5 Pro provides 6Nm of direct-drive force feedback.
Anyone coming from a 9Nm, 16Nm, or 21Nm wheelbase will immediately notice the lower strength. The motor can be overpowered more easily, and stronger effects do not have the same weight or separation.
However, the detail is still there.
During the same rumble-strip test, the R5 Pro accurately reported the track surface and each section of the curb. It also communicated changes in grip, steering load, and vehicle behavior.
The difference is not accuracy. The difference is motor strength and available headroom.
For someone upgrading from a gear-driven or belt-driven wheel, the R5 Pro should feel smoother, faster, and more direct.
It is easy to set up through MOZA Pit House, offers adjustable steering rotation and force-feedback settings, and has been quiet and reliable during my long streaming sessions. I did not experience heat or software problems during testing.
My wheelbase is hard-mounted to a metal simulator rig, where it feels completely solid. Table mounting is also possible, but the final rigidity will depend on the desk or structure supporting it.
MOZA’s quick-release system also remains a strong feature. The wheel attaches securely, and I have not experienced unwanted movement or connection problems.
Truck Simulation With the R5 Pro
The R5 Pro is completely usable in American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator 2.
It reproduces road detail, steering movement, and engine vibration, but I can overpower the motor and stop its movement fairly easily.
The feedback remains present in my hands, but the motor cannot resist me like the R16 Ultra can.
For casual trucking or a first simulator setup, the R5 Pro is adequate. For a more serious trucking rig, I would recommend moving to a stronger wheelbase.
Optional Shaft Extensions
My simulator uses two MOZA shaft extensions to improve the wheel position and driving angle.
These extensions are optional and are not included with either wheelbase.
I have tested this configuration several times and have not noticed additional flex or any reduction in force-feedback detail.
SR-P Lite2 Pedals
The R5 Pro bundle also includes the SR-P Lite2 pedals.
I previously tested the similar SRP2 pedals in a separate review. The Lite2 pedals use high-strength steel construction and contactless Hall sensors for accurate and consistent pedal input.
The pedal spacing can be adjusted by up to 15 millimeters in either direction, and the pedal faces offer up to 36 millimeters of height adjustment.
The main difference is that the Lite2 pedals do not include the rear cylinders containing the additional springs and elastomers. The pedal faces also have fewer adjustment holes.
That simpler design is what makes them the Lite version.
They may look basic, but the all-metal construction makes a major difference compared with entry-level pedal sets that rely heavily on plastic.
With a solid mounting setup, they feel accurate, stable, and consistent.
Which One Should You Buy?
The R5 Pro is the better choice for someone buying a first direct-drive system, upgrading from a basic racing wheel, or working with a smaller budget.
It provides accurate feedback, simple setup, quiet operation, and enough strength for a new or casual driver.
The R16 Ultra is for someone who wants stronger steering, greater force-feedback separation, and more long-term headroom.
It is the better option for serious sim racing and advanced truck-simulation setups.
The R5 Pro is an excellent starting point.
The R16 Ultra is the stronger long-term investment.
